Harry is a nurse’s a nurse’s aid at a hospital on the cardiac floor and was loved by both the staff and the patients due to his fun and pleasant manner. However, Harry was not the brightest bulb in the pack, and this became very frustrating and a great concern to the hospital. He tended to make a lot of mistakes when caring for the patients and could not follow instructions very well.

 

The manager of the Cardiac Unit did not want to fire Harry but also knew he could not continue letting him care for patients. He decided to speak to the Administration Department to see if there was a less demanding job that Harry could handle more easily. They informed him that there was a backup in employee drug screens due to staffing shortages. It was decided the Harry would be put in charge of dipping the drug screen sticks and recording the results. This seemed a simple and straightforward job for Harry.

 

Two weeks later, the Human Resources Department received a call from the medical supply company from which the tests were ordered. They questioned why they dip urine tests were being returned one at a time. The Human Resource Representative went to find Harry.

 

Harry was questioned about the returned tests. He stated that each time he did the test, it would not work right so he had sent them back thinking they were defective. Every time he tried the test and it did not work, he had packaged it up and sent it back to the company only to find the next didn’t work either and so on. The HR rep asked Harry to show her how he performed the test. She then observed him dipping the urine sticks without taking off the protective cap!

 

Needless to say, Harry was out of a job.
